Expressive Structures Provides Backdrop for Company Meeting

Chicago-based Walsh Construction is the 13th largest construction company in the United States. Family owned and in business since 1898, today Walsh operates 18 field offices across the country and employs over 8,000 skilled tradespeople and professional staff.

The name Walsh Construction is synonymous with large-scale urban construction projects and some of the company’s most recognizable jobs include Chicago’s Millenium Park and the newly opened Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletic Center on the shores of Lake Michigan at Northwestern University.

As a company with such a large corporate footprint, Walsh regularly gathers staff from across the country for corporate meetings. Recently Walsh held such an event in Chicago at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel.

The event was planned and executed by Encore Event Technologies and they contacted Expressive Structures to provide custom backdrop pieces for the stage that would accent the rooms built in screen and projection system. We provided three 6’ feet tall by 4’ feet wide acrylic columns to accent the area under the house screen and four 15’ feet tall Hard Panel Scenic flats that sat on either side of the center screen. These panels made an excellent alternative to drab pipe and drape normally found in similar event spaces.

This project presented a small challenge as the meeting was scheduled to be held in the midst of Chicago’s 2019 Polar Vortex weather system, which brought low temperatures of around -40 degrees.

With this challenge and the permission of the venue, we decided to deliver the backdrop a day early to ensure everything was completed on schedule. The pieces were constructed the following day before the event when we would normally deliver and build the same day.

We’re happy to report that despite record low temperatures this job was handled smoothly and our early planning ensured we were able to complete the job despite the freezing Chicago weather.
